5 Joy Inducing Habits

We all experience times in our life when we find ourselves dragging our feet. As we get older, we have a tendency to find less joy in everyday things. We just expect happiness be there at the foot of our bed when we wake up. But for most of us, we have to make it happen. Now that I have kids, my husband and I are constantly pulling together fun things for them to do – especially in the summer – gotta tucker those wild things out! But as an adult, you have to orchestrate happiness for yourself. It's not always easy, but it's important – self care is sacred!

Here are a few ways to instantly boost your mood:

1. Get out of bed on time

If you are like me, you hit the snooze of your alarm until it doesn't work anymore. I've been making a conscious effort to not do this anymore because it starts off my day behind, stressed, and unprepared. All of these things are mood killers - so why start your day on an up hill battle?

2. Have a meditative moment

Of course you knew this was coming. We are obviously huge advocates for meditation over here at My So-Called Cosmic Life. Now that you are getting up on time, you have a minute or two (literally that's all you may need) to center yourself before embarking on your day. Sit quietly with a cup of coffee or whatever – you do you. Just notice and breathe in the calm of the morning.

3. Introduce yourself

Recently I've been introducing myself left and right, and while starting up a conversation with someone new might sound anxiety inducing to some, there is a good chance it will make the other person's day. Doesn't it feel nice when someone acknowledges your presence on the train with a simple "good morning" rather than just shoving you over in the seat? Be that "good morning" person – it's contagious.

4. Explore

Get out of your everyday routine – even if it's just a small departure. It's so easy to fall into routines of going to same restaurants, ordering the same dishes, meeting up with the same people. Make it a habit to explore new things. If you've been wanting to try a new coffee shop – do it! You are the only one who can make it happen.

5. Get some sleep

For the love of God (or Beyonce, or whoever), get some rest! Sleep is so undervalued. Until recently, I used to think that the less I slept, the harder I was working. It was almost bragging amongst some of my work friends. Gross. While it might get true that I was working harder, it doesn't mean that I was getting more done. I was actually way less efficient, spacey, and super sensitive to feedback. Getting 4-6 hours of sleep a night (if that) is the fastest way to burn out, break down, and get sick. It's ok for it to happen once or twice, but if this is something you are doing on the regular you are setting yourself up for failure. Not to mention, you won't be so much less likely to get up on time and start this cycle again. 7 hours minimum kids – help yourself, your happiness depends on it.
