I've been learning how to read birth charts and have found it to be so, so fascinating! Everyone's chart is unique to them. It's like a map of your life, helping guide you to who you are and how you interact with the world. There is so much involved in reading birth charts. In this post i'm just going to introduce Sun signs.
An important thing to note about astrology is that it's all about what's going on in the sky according to our view here on earth. Perspective is everything.
Most everyone knows what their Sun sign is. This is the sign you'll give as an answer to the question, "what sign are you?" From our viewpoint on earth, the Sun appears to travel around the earth once per year. Throughout the year, the Sun passes through all twelve zodiac signs, spending about a month in each sign. Your sun sign is determined by the position of the sun in relationship to the earth at the time of your birth. Whichever zodiac the sun was traveling through when you were born is your Sun sign.
In astrology, the Sun is often referred to as another planet; the most powerful one at that. It gives us life, energy, food, and warmth. It is also a major influence astrologically. Your Sun sign lays a strong foundation for who you are. It defines your individuality, governs your distinctive style, and is a strong force in guiding you to fulfill your goals in life.
The trap comes when you try to identify yourself or someone else with just the Sun sign. It is a powerful influence in making you you, but it's definitely not the only influence. There's your Moon sign, Rising sign and planets to consider as well! The Sun is just the broad strokes of who you are. So if you've ever read a description of your Sun sign and thought, "hmmm, that's not entirely me..." that's because it's not. A full birth chart goes way deeper, and can really be a helpful guide for self reflection.
Next week we'll talk about the Moon and how it might heighten or oppose the effects of your Sun.
